DOUG DILLARD PASSES

Hi Folks,

This week’s show features some of the bands playing at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival this weekend.  What a great weekend for this festival.

We lost another legend this week with the passing of Doug Dillard, a founding member of the Dillards and an influential banjo player.  The Dillards were one of the first bluegrass bands that I saw though by this time Doug had left the group and Billy Ray Latham was on banjo.  I did get to see them twice in 1989 during the reunion tour at the Birchmere and at Winterhawk.  I recorded both of those shows back in my field recording days. A few years ago Rodney and Doug played the AFBA festival in Wind Gap and I was honored to introduce the reformed Dillards to the audience.  I spent a lot of time talking with Rodney that day but only said a few words to Doug.  It was wonderful to see them on stage performing the old Dillard classics one more time. RIP Doug.

Thanks for listening.

Larry
